How much snow is falling on the East Antarctic Plateau?

This is a crucial question but the answer is quite uncertain.

Snowfall is the only way the plateau accumulates mass, and a positive or negative mass balance of the Antarctic continent can have major consequences for sea level rise.

The difficulty in measuring snowfall is partly the size of the continent, 14 million square km, and partly the limited amount of data collected in the field.

Most of the time, satellite data are used to make estimates over such large areas, but field validation is very important.

Furthermore, the amount of snow deposited each year is very variable, as in many polar areas with low accumulation and strong winds, because the wind is redistributing the snow particles all the time.

The team, BE-OI JARE59/60, is on its way to DomeFuji in tracked vehicles, a so called “ground traverse”.

On the way to the Dome, starting from the coast, a network of bamboo stakes have been placed and maintained by the Japanese team at NIPR, and whenever a traverse is organized to the Dome, the stakes are measured.

Over the 1000-km transect from the coast to the Dome, a stake has been place every 2 km! Several areas also have arrays of about 50 stakes.

The data record goes back to 1992, which makes it the longest ever snow accumulation record in Antarctica.

In the picture, you can see two scientists, Shun Tsutaki from JARE60 and Brice Van Lieffering from NPI measuring the height of one of the stakes and taking the new GPS position, on the way to Dome Fuji.
