南極高原での勢ぞろい
2018年11月26日に、日本とノルウェーの2国からの12人の遠征メンバーが、東南極ドロンイングモードランドで勢ぞろいしました。
内陸約450km、海抜2800mの会合地点で撮影した写真には、NPI（ノルウェー極地研究所）の2人の氷河学者をJARE59/60（第59、60次南極地域観測隊）内陸旅行チームに連れて来たBAS（イギリス南極局）のツインオッター機の2人の乗組員も一緒に写っています。
チームはこれから600km先のドームふじ基地に向かいます。
この観測の主な目的は、百万年以上にわたる気候変動を記録している「最も古い氷」の掘削場所を見つけることです。
アラバマ大学とカンザス大学の研究者によって開発された最高性能のレーダーシステムを使用して、内陸旅行を行っています。
レーダー観測の詳細については、今後お知らせします。チームはまた、雪や質量収支の観測や浅層氷床掘削など、他の氷河学や古気候学の研究も実施します。

※明日12月1日は、日本、ノルウェーなど12か国が南極条約に署名したことに因んで「南極の日」と呼ばれています。今年で59周年です！
A rendezvous on the Antarctic Plateau!
On 26th November 2018, 12 expedition members from two nations, Japan and Norway had a rendezvous in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica.
In the picture are also the two crew members of the Twin Otter from BAS that brought the two glaciologists from NPI to the JARE 59/60 traverse team at a meeting point about 450 km inland, 2800 masl.
The team will now continue travelling towards Dome Fuji, another 600 km.
The main aim with this expedition is to find locations of the "oldest ice", archives of climatic records covering more than million years.
The traverse is now travelling with the best available radar system, developed by colleagues at University of Alabama and University of Kansas.
More information on the radar work will follow.
The team is also doing other glaciology and paleoclimatology studies, including snow and mass balance observations and shallow ice coring.
